Sunday saw the due date of our baby come and go. We're now patiently waiting. Having waited 40 weeks, what's a few more days?
I have been thinking about what our little new born will know 'out of the box' so to speak.
Before meeting her, these are the things I'm thinking she'll know...
- The sounds of her mum's voice and laugh
- Milky things are good
- Crying gets help
- Cling-on for safety
- How to look cute and adorable
No service packs or bug fixes
Unlike
cameras or Windows, once born there will be no service packs or bug
fixes to apply. Our baby will be an autonomous learning robot. She'll
have to be capable of learning all the things she'll need to know in
the future, right from day one.
What else? What about safety?
I
guess there's loads of protective instincts that come later; bitter
tastes mean poisonous, snakes are bad. But most lessons will have to be
learnt the hard way; fire is hot, gravity and heights etc.
Update: Now Abigail
has been born, I know. And how amazing by the way! Her immediate reflex
was to feed. Abigail was handed to me whilst they mended Clare and she
was trying to feed. This included her fingers, the blanket, her fist,
her top lip. Oh and crying, she knows how to do that!!
News flash!
I just discovered two new clever tricks babies come pre-installed
with... Babies will not eat when they have a dirty nappy! It must be to
prevent them eating bacteria. Also, she has a special survival head
turning reflex; when laid flat, her head will turn to the side to spit
out any up-chuck she chucks-up. How very clever!
